How to fix “process has stopped” error

Do you guys agree that as an Android user we see error messages/reports on our Android smartphones regarding some application crashed and stop working? Almost all of you will agree and those who don’t are lucky ones! Today’s article is on one such error – “ has stopped. We will gain some knowledge about GApps and solution of this gapps error. Mostly this error is faced when you flash your device to custom ROM and users who upgraded from KitKat 4.4 to Lollipop 5.0.  It is a common issue in Android smartphones brands like LG, Sony, Motorola, Samsung, HTC, Micromax, Asus, Karbonn, Xolo, Nexus, Lenovo, Mi, Lava, Huawei, Nokia, Microsoft, and others. Particularly, the error is more frequently observed on Nexus 7, HTC one, Galaxy S4, Nexus 5.

What is Gapps?

Gapps is a Google Apps package which allow for the automated creation of new up-to-date packages automatically. The development of gapps is completely open-source. This package includes all Google applications like Google Play Store, Google+, Calendar, Desk Clock, Gmail, Chrome browser, Maps, etc. All the daily updates for google apps you get is because of gapps. You can’t integrate GApps with your custom ROM package as it breaks some licensing restrictions; you have to additionally install it. Also, without GApps you won’t be able to install any app from Google Play Store.

Why error “process has stopped” occurs?

This error comes up when the app in question is unable to connect to servers, has timed out or is not in sync. Sometimes a bad firmware or update may cause it. Another reason could be the caches and data that get corrupted creating conflicts in the new system.  Smartphones consisting of Android Jelly Bean, KitKat and Lollipop have faced this issue and the phones stopped working.  Moreover, this error message unfortunately the process has stopped is usually related to the following errors:


  • “Unfortunately, Google Search has stopped.”
  • “Unfortunately, Play Store has stopped.”
  • “Unfortunately, Gmail has stopped.”
  • “Unfortunately, Maps has stopped.”

Above are some observed related errors; there may be other App throwing an error. One major problem of this process (google.process.gapps) is if any of your apps from GApps package stops, all the other apps will also stop working. If one of the google gapps is fixed, all of them will be fixed automatically.

How to fix the “ has stopped” issue?

You can fix this in following four ways and all of them are very easy:

  1. Reset App Preferences
  2. Clear Cache and Data of App
  3. Disable and Re-Enable Download Manager

When such gapps google error occurs, the very first thing you should try to solve the error is clear cache data of the app in question and then go for resetting app preferences. But, if you don’t know which app is causing error you can disable-enable download manager

(1) Clear Cache and Data of the app in question

If you are getting a popup with this error while using a particular app, then you need to first clear the cache of that app. Check whether the error is still coming or not; if it’s still coming you need to clear the data of that particular app.  If these also don’t help, you can clear cache and data of all the Google related apps. If that didn’t work uninstall the app and then reinstall it. 

Note: By clearing the data you will lose any app data (passwords, game progress, chats etc), so you might want to back up your app data first.

Steps to clear cache and data:

  • Go to Settings > Apps > Search for the app and click on it.
  • Scroll downwards and click ‘Clear the cache’.
  • By clearing cache error is not fixed, then click ‘Clear Data’.

(2) Reset App Preferences

To reset app preferences,

  • Go to Settings > Apps.
  • Swipe right to left to get to ‘All’ applications and press the three dots at the upper right corner of your phone screen.
  • Choose ‘Reset app preferences’.

(3) Disable Download Manager

Another quick and easy method is to disable the Download Manager. Specifically, if you don’t know which app is causing the error, you can try out this method. To fix the google.process.gapps has stopped error, you simply need to press disable and then enable it once again.

Steps to disable Download Manager:

  • Go to Settings > Apps.
  • Swipe right to left to get to ‘All’ applications and then look for Download Manager and tap it to open.
  • Click Disable.
  • Once it’s disabled, click Enable.

If you have flashed your Device to custom ROM like Cyanogenmod, Paranoid Android, Omni, SlimRoms, Pac ROM and getting error, then 

  • Firstly try the methods mentioned above.
  • If that didn’t work, check whether you have downloaded the correct version of Gapps for your OS or not. To confirm that you’ve downloaded the correct and full zip file, reflash the gapps via ClockWorkMod and check the md5 value.
  • After reflashing Gapps, repeat Method 2 above.
